The north-west vineyard of Le Ripi, surrounded by luscious forests that guarantee a cool shelter from warm summers, gives birth to this great ‘cool climate‘ Brunello di Montalcino. Intenseruby red, the wine offers a complex bouquet with notes of black currants, blackberry, withered violets, dark chocolate, candied orange peel, tobacco, mushrooms and an intriguing note of pinewood. San Guglielmo Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2016

Song: I Only Have Eyes for You by The Flamingos. A star is born! I cannot hold the excitement for the discovery of this young family-run estate in Montalcino, led by Ilaria and her husband Michael, with its elegant Sangioveses and its unique heart-shaped vineyard. Located in the most wooded area of Montalcino, San Guglielmo was founded in 2016, from the vineyard previously planted by Ilaria’s father, who is still present in the everyday life of the winery with his experience and dedication. This Brunello represents the incredible debut of the winery and Ilaria could not pick a better vintage than 2016! Bouquet is elegant, complex, with notes of cherry in spirit, wild rose, eucalyptus, chocolate and some woodsy hints of mushroom and underbrush, trademarks of the area. Surrounded by luscious forest, Romitorio has a special micro-climate with cooler nights, offering elegant Sangioveses of the finest quality. With a shiny ruby red color, Brio opens with a crunchy cherry, herbaceous notes and an ensemble of rose petals. In the palate is fresh, lively, clean and neat, with a compulsive drinkability and a joyful aftertaste of sour cherry. Il Molinaccio Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva Docg 2019 ‘La Poiana‘

Song: Symphony No. 9, Ode to Joy by Ludwig van Beethoven . A bestseller in the history of the Perbacco Wine Club, Il Molinaccio is a young boutique winery, led by Alessandro Sartini, producing one of the most elegant Sangioveses in all Tuscany. Located in one of the coolest areas of Montepulciano, Il Molinaccio produces a ‘cool climate’ Vino Nobile. ‘La Poiana’ is the most Brunello-like Vino Nobile of all, showing elegance and intensity at the same time. In the glass it shows an inviting ruby red color. Notes of withered violets, cherry in spirit, dried apricot, prune, tobacco and an intriguing balsamic note of menthol. Both in the nose and the palate, all the compounds are beautifully carved in the masterpiece, everything is balanced and well organized in the most harmonious way like in a symphonic orchestra. Podere della Bruciata Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG 2021 ‘Cesiro‘

Song: Dancing in the Dark by Bruce Springsteen. Located in the southern side of Montepulciano, Podere della Bruciata has the highest vineyards in town, peaking 600mts asl, an altitude that guarantees a cool shelter to warm summers and perfect temperature swings. The dynamic Andrea Rossi is running the family estate, founded by Mr Ermete in 1956, carefully producing a limited amount of bottles in order to be able to guarantee high quality standards. Ruby red, with notes of concentrated black berries, violets, chocolate, geranium, a ferrous side of raw meat and a woodsy side of wet forest and mushroom. Palate is dynamic, fresh, with a flavor of sour cherry and red berries. Typical cool climate Sangiovese, despite the warm vintage, the wine offers a Rock attitude with a great sapid push and a grippy tannin. Barbaglia Boca Doc 2019

Song: Moonage Daydream by David Bowie. Depopulated by the industrialization of the 20th century, Boca Doc, with its 50 acres of vineyards divided among 9 wineries, is one of the smallest appellations in Italy, producing fine Nebbiolos (aka Spanna in the area) in the very north of Piedmont, at the foothill of Monte Rosa. The area has cooler temperatures than Langhe, producing elegant wines that resemble pre-climate change Barolos. Silvia Barbaglia runs this incredible boutique winery and I fell in love with the elegance and authenticity of her wines. In the firmament of Piedmont, Boca is a rising star and this wine shines among all Nebbiolos, with a beautiful ruby red color with garnet reflections. Elegant bouquet of Maraschino, red rose, red berries, tobacco, eucalyptus and an intriguing hint of wet stone due to the soil, rich in mineral debris. Palate is complex, lustful, with a never-ending freshness of red currants and a firm tannin that leads to a long, savory finish. A cool climate Nebbiolo of the finest quality, with a Rock, yet elegant personality and an incredible persistence. Barbaglia Colline Novaresi DOC 2022 ‘Cascina del Buonumore‘

Song: Cheek to Cheek by Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong. Cascina del Buonumore by Silvia Barbaglia, one of the most elegant and pleasant wines I have tasted in the past years, is a blend of Nebbiolo and Vespolina typical of Northern Piedmont. With a luminescent ruby red color, the wine opens with fragrant notes of rose petals, tart cherry, orange blossoms, sweet chocolate, wet stones and an herbaceous note of dried leaves. In the palate, a feast for the tastebuds, with a graceful side of sour cherry, a subtle tannin and a sapid, never-ending finish of pomegranate. Vini Franchetti Toscana IGT Rosso 2021 ‘Sancaba‘

Song: I’d Rather Go Blind by Etta James. In 2011 Carlo Franchetti, cousin of the late Andrea Franchetti, iconic winemaker of Trinoro winery, started Sancaba, a parallel project based on Pinot Noir in San Casciano Dei Bagni, in the South-Eastern side of Tuscany. With higher altitudes and a biodynamic approach to winemaking, Sancaba shows the most elegant side of the wines from Franchetti family, with a Burgundy-style Pinot Noir that shows lightheartedness and impeccable quality. A profound and intense Pinot Noir, with notes of red-fleshed fruits such as raspberry and tart cherry, violets, cocoa and a silky touch of coffe beans. Palate is extremely balanced, refined and enjoyable, with many recalls to Burgundy. Structure is Blues, tannins are gentle and silky, while the complexity, typical of great Pinot Noirs, is given by a lingering freshness of red currants, raspberry and violets. Arpepe Valtellina Superiore DOCG 2020 ‘Il Pettirosso‘

Song: All the Young Dudes by David Bowie. Located by the Dolomites in the extreme north of Italy, Valtellina is one of the most charming wine regions in the world, with its terraces built on the steep slopes created by the debris of the Alps. The microclimate of the area, with a great sun exposure during the day and a cool breeze over the night, guarantees a unique wine, whose finesse and minerality are second to none. Arpepe is one of my favorite wineries, producing incredible Nebbiolo (here called Chiavennasca) in this incredible land. Intense garnet color, the bouquet is elegant, with refined notes of wild rose, orange peel, red currants, cherry in spirit, undergrowth and some mineral hints of crushed stone and flint due to the rocky soil. Palate is fresh, vibrant, the character is defined by a firm tannin typical of Nebbiolo, with a sapid, lingering finish of pomegranate and wild rose, for a colorful, yet Rock personality.
